The image of death, dying and mourning in modern German-language literature for children and adolescents, using the example of selected picture books
Vorlová, Kateřina ; Markvartová, Eva (advisor) ; Bučková, Tamara (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on the theme of death, dying and grief in modern German picture books. The theoretical basis of this thesis is, in addition to the chapter on death, its concept in literature, the children's world and theology, a chapter on picture books and the afterlife from the perspective of world religions. In the practical part, selected works are interpreted and compared with each other based on their content. The aim of the thesis is to prove that death has never been a taboo subject in children's literature, but on the contrary, a rich subject, which is popularly depicted. Among other things, the thesis shows that each narrator and protagonist views death in a slightly different way, treats and evaluates it differently. Nevertheless, the final reconciliation is thematized in all texts. KEYWORDS Death, dying, literature, children, adolescents, consolation, sorrow, picture books
Textual interpretation of the Song of Roland
Kolářová, Monika ; Jančík, Jiří (advisor) ; Kalfiřtová, Eva (referee)
This MA thesis deals with the text analysis of the Song of Roland. The text analysis focuses in detail on the formal, content, narrative and symbolic aspects of the Song of Roland. All those features are in the context of the literary and historical frame. The Song of Roland is one of the oldest literary pieces of French literature. It is the most famous heroic song belonging to the "Chanson de geste" and it was created in the 11th century. The main characters of the heroic poem are Charles the great, his nephew Roland, loyal friend Olivier, traitor Galeon and pagan king Marsil. The Song of Roland explores not only the family and friend relations, but the important topics are also betrayal and desire for fortune and glory. The Song deals with the matter of faith being asserted in the way which is typical for the middle ages. The story, which takes part in Spain, where the French have been besieging the pagan fort of Zaragoza for seven years, is very interesting from the historical aspects, but were more interested in the narrative - textual aspects, in which we tried to explore the relationships between the narrators. We focused on individual speeches, who speaks to whom and in which way. We asked ourselves three questions, which we have gradually answered. For the need of an analysis of individual speech...
Guilt, Purification, Forgiveness
Slezáková, Veronika ; Keřkovský, Pavel (advisor) ; Halama, Jindřich (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the conceptions of Guilt, Purification and Forgiveness. Based on the study of the writings of Karl Jaspers, Božena Komárková, Martin Buber and Helmut Weber, the thesis comes to an understanding of the issues of guilt, forgiveness and purification in both philosophical and theological terms. Furthermore, this work introduces other issues that relate to the chosen topic, for example, the concepts of Repentance, Penance and Conversion. Thanks to the acquired findings, I want to come to an understanding of the concept of guilt in Bernhard Schlink's novel The Reader. This thesis is concerned with Schlink's comprehension of guilt as well as with the foundation for reconciliation with guilt that Schlink outlines. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
The Relationship of Hedonism and Humanism
Jerman, Ondřej ; Jirsa, Jakub (advisor) ; Švec, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis discusses the relationship between humanism and hedonism. However, its main objective is not to explain the terms in their summarized historical relatedness but to point out their internal coherence. The fundamental issue the thesis deals with is the fact that sentient beings suffer from sorrow. Enumerating the reasons why it is important to search for a solution would be a waste of our reader's time. It is necessary to understand that we don't expect empirical science to solve the problem since - despite the enthusiasm significant for this modern period - has not introduced any relief from sorrow. Here comes the opportunity for philosophy and, eventually, ethics. In its first part the thesis maps out the context of humanism and hedonism, studies their apparent as well as hidden nature, and lays the conceivable foundations of humanistic hedonism. The following section suggests a set of particular steps. Adhering to these instructions makes it possible to experience delight and to eliminate sorrow.
